It’s important to learn a foreign language

More than thirty years ago, our country carried out an opening policy. I had a chance to visit a relative abroad.

Next day I arrived in Sydney in Australian. My relative went to work. I took this opportunity to go sightseeing of the city. The street was so quiet that any sound could be heard. I walked along the main street for two hours, passed a river, and then turned right into a small town.

Near noontime, I felt hungry. I walked into a restaurant. The waitress came up to me. She smiled and handed me a menu when I sat down. I can’t read a single word in the menu at all. They were all English. Then I pointed a dish in menu carelessly. A little while, the waitress served me a soup. I enjoyed the food and found it delicious. All of a sudden I thought of Beijing roast duck and wanted to taste it but I had no idea how to tell the waitress. Then I took a piece of paper from my bag and drew a duck on it. The waitress stared at it for a long time but she didn’t understand what it was. Shortly afterwards she found out a picture of chicken from the counter and showed it me. When I saw it, I shook my head wildly. Just at this time, I saw a local young man sitting beside table. He was enjoying the roast duck. When he almost finished, he knocked the plate and said “the same”. A few minutes later, when a waitress served him a roast duck once more. I immediately realized “the same” in English of its meaning is roast duck. Imitating that young man, I knocked my plate and also said “the same”. At the moment the waitress served me the soup that I’ve just had. I felt depressed. I wanted to complain the waitress, but I couldn’t do so.

“What a day!” I said to myself when I walked out the restaurant.  It was puzzled me for a long time. I was completely at loss. Why the identical “the same” has different meaning.

In the evening when I had dinner with my relatives. I told them all what had happened at the restaurant. They all laughed. One little nephew of mine said: “It is important to learn a foreign language”. I nodded and smiled unnaturally. From that time on I began to study English starting from “A, B, C.”.
